Privacy Policy

Overview

Pirate Weather Extension is designed with privacy as a core principle. We collect the minimum amount of data necessary to provide weather information and never share your data with third parties.

Data We Collect

Location Data

When you use the extension, your geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) are used to fetch weather data. This happens only when:

  • You grant location permission and use the "Current Location" feature
  • You search for and save a specific city or location

Important: Your location coordinates are used to fetch weather forecasts and are never stored or logged on our servers. If you use your own API key, requests go directly to the Pirate Weather API.

Installation Identifier

When you first install the extension, a random identifier is generated and stored locally. This ID is sent with weather requests to support rate limiting. It cannot be linked to your identity, browsing activity, or any personal information.

API Key

The extension works without an API key. If you choose to enter your own Pirate Weather API key, it is stored locally in your browser and sent only to the Pirate Weather API to authenticate your requests.

Saved Locations

When you save locations (like "Home" or "Work"), the location name and coordinates are stored locally in your browser. This data never leaves your device except when making weather requests.

Cached Weather Data

Recent weather data is cached locally in your browser to provide faster loading and offline access. This cache is automatically cleared and refreshed.

Data We Do NOT Collect

  • Personal information (name, email, etc.)
  • Browsing history or activity
  • Your location coordinates on our servers
  • Advertising identifiers

Third-Party Services

The extension communicates with the following external services:

Pirate Weather Proxy

By default, weather requests are routed through a proxy service that provides a shared API key so the extension works without setup. The proxy collects the following anonymized data per request for service monitoring:

  • Installation ID — the random identifier described above
  • Country — your general geographic region
  • Request status and response time — for service health monitoring

Your location coordinates, IP address, and browsing activity are not logged. You can bypass the proxy entirely by entering your own API key in Settings.

Pirate Weather API (api.pirateweather.net)

Weather data is fetched from the Pirate Weather API. Your location coordinates and API key are sent with each request. See the Pirate Weather documentation for their data practices.

OpenStreetMap Nominatim (nominatim.openstreetmap.org)

City search functionality uses OpenStreetMap's Nominatim geocoding service. Only the search query (city name) is sent. See OpenStreetMap's privacy policy.

Data Storage

All data is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API:

  • API Key: Stored in local storage, persists until you remove it
  • Saved Locations: Stored in local storage, persists until you delete them
  • Weather Cache: Stored temporarily, automatically refreshed
  • Settings: Unit preferences stored in local storage

You can clear all extension data at any time through Chrome's extension settings or by uninstalling the extension.

No Tracking

This extension contains no tracking pixels, advertising scripts, or third-party analytics. The proxy service collects only the minimal anonymized data described above to keep the service running. We never know your name, your location, or what weather you check. You can bypass all data collection by entering your own API key in Settings.

Changes to This Policy

If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be noted in the extension's changelog.
